National Senior Citizens Day - Wesley Glen Retirement Community

National Senior Citizens Day

August  21st is National Senior Citizens Day,  and this day was created as a day to support, honor and show appreciation to our seniors and to recognize their achievements and the contributions they make to our communities.
On August 19, 1988, President Ronald Reagan signed Proclamation 5847 declaring August 21 as National Senior Citizens Day.  In this Presidential Proclamation, he said:
“For all they have achieved throughout life and for all they continue to accomplish, we owe older citizens our thanks and heartfelt salute.  We can demonstrate our gratitude and esteem by making sure our communities are good places in which to mature and grow older-places in which older people can participate to the fullest and can find encouragement, acceptance and services they need to continue to lead lives of independence and dignity.”
Various events and activities are organized on Senior Citizens Day to raise awareness of supporting our seniors and recognizing their achievements.  Check with your events coordinator for special programs happening at your location.
If you plan to spend the day out, check for special discounts and promotions that may be offered at restaurants, stores, and movie theatres in you area.
